November

Remember that idea about primes and factoring that I had back in July? Well, ever since then, I've been thinking about it … it turned out to be amazingly deep and fascinating. I don't mean that the idea is profound; it's deep like a rich lode, or maybe a rabbit hole. As for being fascinating, well, I think what gets me is the way it combines elements of math (abstract) and numbers (concrete) with the behavior of the mind.

Still, about a month ago, I figured that I'd mapped out all the basic features of the lode, and that further progress would require a lot more effort. So, I decided I'd write down what I knew, and hopefully get it out of my system for a while. Then, as usual, one thing led to another … I ended up with ten long essays and a total of roughly forty screen pages.

If you're wondering where to begin, I can suggest two starting points. You could re-read the original essay Primes and follow the thread to two new ones, or you could go read the essay In Other Bases. Unless you really like numbers, the latter is probably much more interesting … it shows that in a sense, base 10 is the best!
